The Land of the TITANS

Since the beginning of the world ☥ Jiu Valley

In the heart of the Retezat Mountains, where legends intertwine with reality, lies a story as old as time, about titans, giants, and immortal heroes. A circuit that you must take once in your lifetime 👊 the Circuit of the TITANS.

In this mysterious valley, known today as the Jiu Valley, rise the Sphinxes of Parâng and the Stone Men of the Land of the Titans, silent witnesses of unimaginable times. Following in the footsteps of the titan Prometheus, who was chained on the peak of Parâng to spread the fire of life, we discover a history deeply carved into the rocks. Here, in the Tăii Gorges and in the Devil’s Cave, the traces of the battles between titans and the giants who tried to overthrow the heavens are still preserved. The deep valleys and towering mountains were witnesses to those colossal struggles, and the marks left upon the stone remain visible even today, as signs of a bygone age.

At the root of these tales stands an ancient people, the momârlani, who lived in these sacred places. According to their tradition, they erected the Stone Men, vestiges of a primeval civilization in which rituals dedicated to the Most High were practiced by hermit priests of Zalmoxis. To this tradition is added the legend of Pelasgos, the first man born on Earth, descended from the race of titans and kin to the ancestors of the Geto-Romanians, who lived in this land and believed that the Retezat Mountains were the cradle of the gods.

The story continues with the heroic Iovan Iorgovan, a legendary hero who fought against the giants and ogres that spread terror throughout these lands. With his mace in hand and immense strength, Iorgovan smashed the giants against the mountain cliffs, leaving their faces imprinted in stone. It is said that the lakes surrounding these mountains are the result of an ancient battle, in which an ogre was defeated by a brave warrior who cut off his head and turned it into a great rock, while the water in the lakes was the blood of the slain giant. Yet mythology does not end here.

Throughout time, ancient myths and legends have merged with history, and the peaks of Parâng and Retezat continue to preserve the memory of the titans and heroes who shaped the history of this land. One of the most important moments of our journey is the encounter with Tartaros of Gârbovu, a titan who, immobilized in stone, awaits us at the end of the road. This is the climax of a circuit through the Valley of Hyperborea, a route where mythology and history intertwine, and where every step brings you closer to the ancient legends of Hunedoara.

Thus, this journey through the land of titans and stone men leads us not only through an awe-inspiring landscape but also through a fascinating history, full of legends that bind us to our ancestral roots. A place where stones speak, and mountains guard the secrets of a glorious past waiting to be discovered 👊 the Land of the GODS 💪
