About 10 km from Craiova, the oldest complete clay vessel in the country is preserved in the collection of the Oltenia Museum. It is handmade, not on the potter’s wheel, painted in polychrome, and recalls the first agricultural community of the world. The Neolithic settlement of Cârcea is located between two landmarks known by locals as “La viaduct” and “La Hanuri,” right next to the electrified Craiova-Bucharest railway.
The Cârcea vessel was discovered in 1971, southwest of the Cârcea CFR stop, at the „La Hanuri” site, in section I, square 2, at a depth of 1.70 meters, in pit number 1. It was found in a Neolithic waste pit from about 8,000 years ago, which contained no fewer than 8,000 ceramic fragments. Among them was an intact, polychrome, handmade vessel, the oldest Neolithic vessel in Romania.
Brâncuși’s Triptych of Immortality 🏺
The vessel is globular, flattened, with a cylindrical neck and four legs in the shape of a circular segment. It has four protrusions along its maximum diameter. It is made from fine, red paste and is well-polished. The walls are strongly bulging. The painting consists of white rows of rhombuses combined with elongated dots arranged vertically and horizontally on a red-brown background.
